Zbrush Goblin aaand ACTION

After some Colors in progress in Photoshop some months ago on my Youtube channel (remember ? Seamus the Leprechaun, The Dickens Kobold and the Thief) , here I am again for introducing a sculpture on Zbrush, that I'm trying to film while I'm sculpting.

My recent post on FB shew you these four-legged little Goblin that I named Mott created on ZBrush too

You can check the process also on the website of Zbrushcentral at this LINK ! Unfortunately there are no videos of the process because the software crashed a lot during the creation.

But now, I head myself on one of my favorite character :

I've just begun to sculpt and to film the process (Youtube). This is very interesting to shift a 2D illustration into 3D and I must admit a real challenge for someone who used to work only in 2D. I didn't realize that some shape in 2D was complex to shift in 3D, what seems simple in 2D in my eyes wasn't that easy finally !

As I work for concept art for CG animations, this is a real and necessary tool for me to make the sculptor understand what I mean with my 2D pictures and to head him to my idea.
So working on 3D is just the best thing to do to understand the difficulties the sculptors could go through and to help him the best I can.

Very soon a little sneak shot of the sculpt !

Hi Happy People !

What a big and incredible journey ! I just came home 2 days ago, exhausted but so happy, with wonderful and huge memories in mind !

I was happy to see French guys there (David Thierrée - Virginie Ropars) !! Brittany Power ^^

I had the chance to talk to friends in real, not by emails ! and meet them in flesh, blood and bones : Scott Gustafson, Paul Bonner, Paul Tobin : you 3 are just fantastic ! I shook with great pleasure (and shyly and impressed) the hand of Iain McCaig, Mike Mignola. I met for the first time lovely talented people like Petar Meseldzija, Omar Rayyan, Kyle Bice, Craig Elliot, Justin Gerard, Justin Sweet, Brom, Stéphane Martinière, some guys of Blizzard !! and so and so... I met again Giant artists like Donato Giancola, Boris Vallejo, Julie Bell, Greg Manchess, Irene Gallo ...
My head was turning everywhere ! Thanks to Renae Taylor, I learnt a new word "Mingle" which mean socialize ^^ - Very important for a bear like me !!
And I saw plenty of art which kick your ass !

I'm still exciting of the trip :)

Nothing of this would have happened if James Gurney hasn't asked me to come ! Thanks you Jim and Jeanette for these amazing 3 days, for the booth and everything ! Again Congratulations for your Great Master Award. That was so cool when your picture appeared in big in front of us ! Just Awesome !

I was very happy to be nominated when we know how many people send entries. But winning 2 awards, I'm just overjoyed, proud and moved. It's hard sometimes to wake up in the morning, go to the drawing table with the same pure strength but hey ! I'm not alone in my case ;-) and it was really delightful to share impressions with all those guys.

Congrats for all the nominates, for the winners of the show and to all who came to the show (exhibitors and members) ! And of course a big huge thanks to Cathy and Arnie Fenner and their crew to have made this possible and to push the Fantasy Art High and Bright !

Now I'm just filled with good vibs and happy.
See you for the 2nd edition of SFAL I hope !

Best wishes to all of you :)

Dickens Kobold

As I told you on my Facebook page, all began when I saw a cute Jack Russell dog on the internet while I was doing some researches. I was thinking about doing a mean creature and I added this spot on his eyes to bring him a little something of mishievous at his look.
To see the 1st part of the video, it's HERE
And to watch the 2nd part it is just THERE ;-)

PS- if you ever meet him in a dark street and that he invites you to drink a beer at the bar, watch out ! Don't look at his doggy eyes, refuse (politely) and turn back right away !!

Stop Thief !

Au voleur ! Stop Thief !

Hi Guys ! After a big week of a tough fight with my slooow computer and a malware, I'm back ! I'm still struggling with the settings now but the worse is away ! Man vs Machine ^^
That's the problem when you work on computer... With paper there are not that kinds of problems.
These informatic things drive me completely insane ! But fortunately, with me Master Yoda was !

Therefore, I'm really happy to show you a new video with a creature as I enjoy to draw. But finally, just after making the video I decided to modify a little more my picture so here is the final picture of my pirateThief. Can you see what has changed then ? ;-)

and on this Link the whole process of it (no parts this time Yeah! but hang on for about 14min).

I have first prepared the skecth, scanned it and then painted all it on my Cintiq. It took me a day to finish it.

Séamus Finnigan Leprechaun

Thanks again for all your nice comments on Facebook about the Leprechaun Séamus Finnigan that I drew for the St. Patrick's Day 2012.

If you want to see again the 6 speed step by step of the creation, from the sketch to the color : watch my Youtube page.

Some of you told me that it wasn't a good tutorial, well, yes !! I totally agree and I didn't mean to ! Sorry If I made you believe it was a tutorial. I made these videos to answer at many of you who wondered how I was working on my Cintiq and on Photoshop and also for my pleasure (it's the first time that I do it). So this is just a fast approach to show you my method.

I have also to find a good way and not too heavy for my computer to make videos, slower and "learnable" maybe with sometimes with subtitles or sort of, I have to find out the easiest way for me ! It won't be "real" tutorials anyway but if you can learn few things I would be glad !

Séamus Finnigan took me a big part of an afternoon and of the evening. I tried to be the closest of what I could have done in real paint. I didn't use photos or texture references for the skin and the cloths as I could have done if I had really wanted to go faster. I wanted to keep a real traditional touch. However, for my concept work, I use these helps to achieve the concepts faster.

Thanks again Everybody for your support and comments during these last few days ! I appreciate a lot.
I had great fun to do it and be sure to see more videos soon.

Sketches for Diablo 3

As I promised Fellows, here are some studies of my work for Diablo III : Book of Cain (Blizzard Entertainment / Insight Editions).

Although I've been contacted quite soon, because of my request of Canadian residency I could only begin one month and a half before the deadline. So I had only 2-3 days to work on each picture, and that was letting me the time to modify them when the Blizzard team was asking.

Tathamet : I began with this one and as I like to complicate myself, I created a 3D version on Zbrush to find a good angle before drawing.
Finally this sketch was one of the last with which I ended. Probably, the 3D made me get nervous I think and I needed to relax before ^^

The return of few soldiers from the war, Itherael an Archangel, and the damned items ^^
Who said that it was easy to create a cube, a staff and a hammer ! ;-) That wasn't easy at all ^^

The Hellforge, Andariel and the explosion of the stone and in this one, I created a 3D bridge too in Zbrush in order to help to find the good way.

Here some important characters, Deckard Cain, Charsi, Farnham, Wirt that I first drew as an old man, then much younger, sit down, stand up, the wood leg on the right, on the left... I like the frame corner and I like the tattoo of Charsi, I found out it fitted her so well.

Here we go on Diablo ! Frist too beasty, I tried to show a creature more intelligent who sweats as much the might as the ferocity.

Some people tortured in Tristram, with little details which change, a frame with lots of details ^^and the big demon Baal (I like this one^^)

Another frame on the left the published one and on the right, the first sketch. I liked the babies in jars but it seemed to creepy ^^, Then the summoning, this one was fun to build : the foreground bigger, the middle the arch darker and the main scene in the background lighter although this does not bode well, as if we were spying the event, hidden behind something. And the wise guardian Rathma the dragon.

Deamon Vs Angel

And some preliminary sketchs with which I played first to help me to go into the mood :

Spectrum Fantastic Art Live

I'm so glad to announce that I will be at Spectrum Fantastic Art Live May 18-20, in Kansas City !

You will be able to find me Booth #1003, sharing the same table than James Gurney, who propose to join him and share his space.
It is the first edition of this convention organized by Cathy and Arnie Fenner, the great and well known publishers of Spectrum Fantastic Art. They decided to create this event and create a big meeting and this time not only on the pages of a book.

Be sure to meet great great artists there and for myself, I will try to see all the people I just know by email ! Paul Tobin, Paul Bonner, Scott Gustafson, Omar Rayyan, Petar Meseldzija, Mike Mignola, Iain McCaig etc... And of course meet again good friends and artists and fans !

I'm waiting for you !

Xmas is coming !

Artbook Diablo III

I'm so happy to be allowed at least to talk about this : I have worked some months ago for Blizzard Entertainment on the great and so expected artbook Diablo III : Book of Cain - published by Insight Editions (available on pre-order on amazon : HERE)

I have been so happy first when they wrote me. In fact I have been a Diablo player addict for years so it's like a complete circle : in front of the computer to play like a fool and in front of my table to draw their creatures like a fool. YEAH ! And after I have been completely excited when I knew who would draw with me on the artbook. I feel very honored and privileged.

A few names to catch your attention : James Gurney, Adrian Smith, Iain McCaig, John Howe, Brom, ... and sooo many great artists.

I have got 23 sketch pictures (with soft watercolor for a few) inside, this is crazy and I hope that you will apreciate them all. I have tried to keep the mood and thanks to the Blizzard Team, it was impossible to do mistakes about the story and elements, that I was tended to add ;-) (professional deformation certainly !)

Sorry Guys I won't reveal more pictures than they did for the promotion of the book on amazon, but trust me I really want to !

DIABLO III Book of Cain - in November 2011

New sketch on Ebay

As I have already let you know, from September I will offer for sale sketches for auction on the Ebay page of "Margotteworkshop".
I had to use facebook to promote the event, unfortunately at the moment is a bit compromised;-)
So don't hesitate to advertise for the upcoming events around you.
Here again the first images that will be auctioned in order of appearance from, I hope, September 5. Each auction will last one week.
If all goes well, it should participate in the rent of a private studio in Montreal.

Très Elfiquement,

J-Baptiste Monge

For those who have noticed, unfortunately, I had a little trouble, and by accident or by magic, ahem, my profile page full of more 4000 friends  has been transformed into a fan page all rotten with hardly half of the registrants...

For all those who have disappeared from my list you'll see me really sorry, I will try to reverse, but it seems that there are risks, so I will not promise anything!

Little Fun !

We can see blossomming caricatures a little everywhere by some guys all more an more talented, but we have to say that when we know how to use Photoshop, it's not as tricky that it seems.

It's a kind of cheat even if it remains really fun to do. A little of the tool "wrap", then we replace some elements : nose, eyes, mouth... then we paint it all from the shade of the photo et that is what we can do in 45 min. Of course, we could make it thinner, pass it in Painter et make a little render of real paint and sure we could pass as a great caricaturist...

Merry Christmas and wonderful Christmas Holidays to all !

In waiting for seeing you all again healthy next year !

Très Elfiquement Vôtre,
Very Elfishly Yours,

Interview on Academy of Art character and Creature Design Notes

I would like to thank a lot Jennifer Gwynn Oliver for her true kindness and her great questions. She is an instructor at the Academy of Art character and Creature Design Notes and Illustrator/Designerat Disney. She also spends time to full and share a blog very complete and full of very interesting things about animations, designs. I advice you all to follow it.

The interview are in 2 parts :

the first : here
and the second : here

It was quite fun to answer her and I would like to thank her again for the grammatical adjustments too.
I really hope that you will enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed answering.

Just have a look there, it's just beautiful. I love the music, I love the animation, very graceful, sensitive and very emotional too.

Thank you again !!

PS: I would like to notify that I don't smoke anymore since September, 20th 2008 (the pic on the 2nd interview is a bit old ^^)
